During this stressful period with COVID-19, many people are stuck at home. Everyone is coping differently. Some better than others. I wanted to give you some ideas for things you can do to minimize the impact of this stress. Much of this will work, even if you’re not stuck at home.
Disclaimer – I am not a mental health professional. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health issues, seek the guidance from a medical professional.
What’s most important about this is that If you can recognize symptoms early, often you can take actions that will minimize the impact.
What are some of these symptoms? Crying, trouble sleeping, trouble concentrating, irritability (aggressive or outbursts), guilt/shame, lack of interest in things you usually enjoy.
What can you do now to slow the tide of emotions?
Walking and other exercise
Give yourself a facial or a manicure, pedicure
Create a schedule
Throw out the schedule
Give yourself grace – you will not do it right all the time, you may not get it right most of the time.
Eat healthy foods
Connect with friends (especially those you haven’t spoken to in a while)
Take on a project that will challenge and distract you
Take a break from the news and social media
Give a donation – it can be time, money, or items
Make yourself do an activity you usually enjoy, even when you’re not feeling it
Cook something new and creative
Do you have a tip that works for you, and might help another add it in the comments below.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the “hype” of what’s going on, but if you can identify that you’re not coping well, you can change that. Now. Small actions can lead to big changes in our outlook and experience.
